Students will be required to read a series of extracts from news articles and the textbook, Winning Through Enlightenment, prior to class. In class debates will improve the students’ knowledge of the relevant vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to present their own views in a logical and systematic way thereby encouraging debate. Acquisition of approximately 500 words related to the study will be expected.
The objective of the course is to enhance student ability to discuss issues in English at a higher level than practical conversation, and give opinions based on the issues discussed in the textbook. Essentially, this class builds an advanced understanding of academic debate through analysis of the psychology of human motivation in practical life. The material is relevant to all issues that students confront in daily life and is designed to motivate as well as teach.
