概述

This course will introduce the relationship between language and culture, as well as language and culture in English communication interactions. This course aims to cultivate students’ ability to analyze culture through language and theoretical analysis and to study the relationship between language and culture to help learners master the cultural differences between their own culture and English-speaking culture. In addition, it will explore respectful cross-cultural communication interactions, such as learning about language and physical expression of cultural taboos, etiquette, and social interaction.

教學方式

The themes of this course covers the definitions of culture, how the English language reflects culture, cross-language and cross-cultural communication theories, and language and culture research topics: 1. In terms of cultural value definitions, students will learn about the theoretical structure of culture, the differences between Eastern and Western cultures, and the characteristics of different cultural groups, such as comparing the similarities and differences between the European cultural circle and the Confucian (Chinese) cultural circle. 2. In terms of cultural and linguistic relations, students will explore the impact of cultural value systems on language and nonverbal behavior. 3. In cross-cultural communication issues, students will conduct cross-cultural communication analysis activities. 4. The teaching methods include lecturing, group discussion, video watching and other intercultural communication game activities as supplements.

Mid-term exam (Written exam on course content) 25% Final exam (Written exam on course content) 25% Attendance and Participation (In-class discussion and activity) 25% Oral Presentation (Group presentation of cultural topic analysis) 25% * The grading of the presentation will focus on these dimensions: content and structure organization, pronunciation, intonation, fluency, volume, body language, eye contact, effectiveness of visual aids, and analysis of topic using theories and concepts in this course. 1. * If you need to take leave of absence, please remember to follow the school procedure for taking leave of absence and make sure the form is approved. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Points will be deducted each time for students who are late to class, leave early, or are absent without notice. LEAVE of ABSENCE OR ABSENCE WITHOUT NOTICE over 8 times will result in a failing grade. 2. According to the Humanities and Social Science Education Center meeting on September 23, 2013: In order to improve the quality of teaching and the efficiency of students’ learning, students in the classrooms are not allowed to use 3C products for all courses offered by the center. (Except for special circumstances indicated otherwise.) 3. Engaging in activities unrelated to the course will affect your participation grades. 4. Please write assignments and exams yourself and do not cheat. Once found, the assignment will be graded as zero. 5. Please submit your assignments on time. A failing grade will be given for the late assignment. 6. For students graduating this year, please note that in this course you will need to complete 18 weeks to receive final grades. Please take this into account when you sign up for the course.
