This one-term, weekly course will introduce to undergraduate students, through a close reading of Walter Scott and Diana Gabaldon, the development of British historical novels from the early nineteenth to the twentieth century.
By taking this course, students will be introduced to essential techniques and skills in the study of historical fiction, as a genre, as practiced at university level. This course is designed not only to broaden students’ understanding of English literature, but also to foster informed and critical reading, and as well as to cultivate scholarly habits of writing and presentation.
Paper: 60% One critical paper (800-1200 words) to be submitted before the end of the term. The assignment will require both literary and historical critical research and reference to sources. All references (including bibliography and footnotes) should be either MLA (American) or MHRA (British) format. Single space, Times New Roman x12, A4 paper. Please submit the hard copy of your paper to the lecturer. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden (those who plagiarize will get no credit from the course). Oral Reports: 20% The group oral report to the class should be around 20 minutes. The student will provide an outline to the lecturer, as well as a copy of the bibliography or reference to each student in the class at the time of the report. Attendance: 20% Please do email the course lecturer at least one day your written request for leave of absence.
