This one credit course is meant to give graduate students practice speaking in front of a scientific audience and to explore research related topics in detail. Graduate students will share their individual research interests/topics, and organize presentations for faculty and other students.Students are expected to further advance and deepen their knowledge regarding research methods through discussions of research related references made in their fields of specialization. Students will make presentations on the progress of their individual research and will hold discussions with other students to expand the range of their research. The seminar will foster collaboration and mutual support among the enrolled students. It will also serve as a socialization to professional skills and responsibilities such as discussing or reviewing other researchers’ work, and learning and discussing responsible conduct of research, such as practices of data acquisition and sharing, and human subject protection.It is also designed to help graduate students improve as speakers, each student will receive feedbacks from the fellow students and instructor. After students’presentations, they need to arrange a time to meet with instructor to discuss their performance.
Learning Outcome #1: The learners will be able to conduct thorough literature reviewsand analyses, and deliver their resultsin an organized manner. Learning Outcome #2: The learners will be an active and engaged participant by analyzing, constructing/creating, and evaluating information presented in scientific journals. Learning Outcome #3: The learners will examine best practices and implement them for designing, developing and presenting a quality scientific presentation. Learning Outcome #4: The learners will be able to understand and clarify health-related concepts, and connectthese concepts with practical research. Learning Outcome #5:The learners willpractice critical evaluation of other students or researchers’ work and advance their individual critical thinking. Learning Outcome #6:The learners will facilitate their abilities in constructing research proposals and conducting research.
