There is no shortage of technical accounts of algorithm, but the social processes of how they are built and the consequences of them being incorporated into different worlds deserve equal if not more attention. Accordingly, the course focuses on social scientific accounts of algorithms and ways to reconsider their operation in contemporary society. It is divided into two parts: the first half explores social practices of algorithm development and the second half algorithms and ethics. Two key texts will be covered during the course: The Construction of Algorithms provides an ethnographic account of the development of algorithms in a world-leading computing science lab and Cloud Ethics provides new ways of rethinking how algorithms (should) operate by exploring different sociotechnical scenes co-constituted by algorithms.
Understanding the social processes of how they are built and critically reflecting upon the consequences of them being incorporated into different worlds.
