概述

In this course, students will read a renowned international scholar Nancy Nersessian’s manuscript titled Modeling Dynamics: The Cognitive-Cultural Systems of Bioengineering Modeling Practices (to be published soon). Through her book, students will learn two sets of interdisciplinary skills. One is to apply the cognitive ethnography research method to study modeling practice in scientific labs. The other uses conceptual resources from the philosophy of mind and cognitive science to systematize the qualitative data collected through the cognitive ethnography method. We will negotiate the actual meeting in the first week (e.g., meet every other week for 2 hours)

教學方式

1. Students will learn a qualitative research method called cognitive ethnography. 2. Students will learn about biomedical modeling practice, philosophy of mind and cognitive science. 3. Students will learn an exemplary way of combining multiple disciplinary perspectives to produce research outcomes through Nersessian’s work.

Undergraduate students: a. A book review article (800-1500 words in English, 2000-3000 words in Chinese)(75%) If some online or physical non-academic media publish the article, the final grade will increase by 5% b. Discussion and participation (20%) Graduate students: a. In-class presentation (30%) b. A book review article (800-1500 words in English, 2000-3000 words in Chinese)(60%) If online or physical non-academic media publish the article, the final grade will increase by 2.5 %. If some academic media or journal publishes the article, the final grade will increase by 5 % for media and 7.5 % for journals. c. Discussion and participation (10%)
