Environmental issues have profoundly affected the economy, technology development, natural ecology, the personal and the national identity in Taiwan. From the food we eat, the electricity we use, the air we breathe, etc., the human-environment interaction not only impacts personal health and local livelihoods, but also shape/ are shaped by the domestic and global politics in a much broader scale. However, how much do we understand, and what “care” are we offering to the environmental issues and their close connection to the rapidly changing global order? What cultural, historical, and political conditions are embedded in our imagination, intervention, care, consumption, or disregard for the environment and nature? What kind of self-awareness and worldview is reflected? How does this worldview differ from people from other cultures and geographical regions? Exploring these topics forms the core of this Taiwan-US Global Classroom, a co-learning platform which allows us to work closely with research partners at Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, Appalachian University, the University of California, Irvine in the US , as well as tribal environmental activists around the world. Through classic reading, classroom discussions, walking, research collaboration, and creative writing, this class is designed to offer interdisciplinary, cross-border, and cross-cultural dialogues to explore the multifaceted relationship among self, society, nature, and globalization. This course addresses the changing meanings and entangled relationship among self, society and nature in different cultures and historical contexts. We will develop active dialogues with our global partners from the US to explore the multifaceted epistemic, social and political cultures of representing, manufacturing and designing the self and society in responding to the changing global dynamics. The course covers a range of related topics including the perceptions of the self, the collective and the natural worlds through sciences, literature and arts, the changing relationship between human-nature in various cultures, and how our perceptions of the self, community and nature impact environmental policymaking and actions on sustainability. Departing from traditional lecturing, this course is design as an NYCU-UVA Global Classroom which values ACTIVE LEARNING & GLOBAL OUTREACH. Class will be operated using interactive seminar format and requires direct participation in both in-class and out-class activities to stimulate student-instructor and student-student dialogues rather than just listening to a professor and taking note. During the course period, you are expected to actively engage in the dialogues with local communities, as well as global partners from the US, to explore different historical, philosophical, social and political factors that shape our perceptions of nature, community, environmental justice and human-nature relationship across cultures. Three teaching formats will be used to facilitate the course progress: 1.Global seminar and research exchange with the US partners to investigate cross-cultural perceptions of nature, community, human-nature relationship and environmental justice. 2.“Walkshop” at two natural sites (軍艦岩,農禪寺) to experience walking as a way of knowing, reading and engaging with Nature, Community and Self; 3.Creative Writing Workshop with American poet Scott Ezell to explore alternative writing that connect self, society and nature.
