This is an interdisciplinary graduate seminar seeking to explore the cultures and societies of the late colonial to the contemporary period in Southeast Asia. Key themes to be covered include: colonial expansion and racial hierarchy; the birth of the nation-states; the effects of modern statecraft; the flow of labour and commodities, and the cultural and economic implications of globalization. Drawing widely from anthropology, political science, history, and literature, this course wishes to present deeply historicized ethnographies --- from “classic” to contemporary texts --- that situate Southeast Asia as a field of power and knowledge. * The syllabus is subject to change. All changes will be announced and explained in class. NO FURTHER UPDATES WILL BE PROVIDED HERE. ** All participants are required to show up for the first class to recieve the link to the updated syllabus. THOSE WHO FAIL TO SHOW UP FOR THE FIRST MEETING WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS WITH NO EXCEPTIONS.
