Lexical items are building blocks of sentences. Therefore, it is impossible to understand sentence structures and their meanings with no sufficient morphological knowledge. This course aims to enhance the enrolled students’ knowledge about morphology, syntax and semantics. In the first few weeks, we will look at important morphological mechanisms, seeking to understand how words are constructed. Later, we turn to syntax; we will talk about important syntactic concepts such as X-bar theory, phrase structure rules and transformational grammar. The last part of this course aims to lead the students to know the semantic rules that are used to interpret words, phrases and sentences.

HOMEWORK POLICY 1. You may discuss homework with your classmates. However, simply copying your classmate’s answers is strictly prohibited. 2. All the assignments have to be turned in on time. If you turn in the homework one day after the due day, the score of the assignment will have a deduction of 10%; if your turn in the homework two days after the due day, the score of the assignment will have a deduction of 20%.
