In this course, we will study linear algebra which is one of the important branches of mathematics about the study of the linear systems and properties of the matrices. The topics will include linear systems, vector spaces, basis, linear transformation, orthogonality, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, singular value decomposition, etc..
This is the required course for students in department of applied mathematics. The course has no specific prerequisites.
We will use blackboard or online lecture. This depends on the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The grading polices are based on the following: 1. Two Midterm exams ( 48%): One will be held on November 2 and the other will be on December 28. The worst exam will take 20%. 2. Weekly Quizzes (26%): We will have 12 Quizzes in total. We will take the average of the best 10 as your grade for quizzes. 3. Final oral exam (14%): The oral exam will be held on January 4 and 5. The detail will be announced on the first day of class. 4. Weekly homework (12%): We will have 12 homework assignments in total. We will take the average of the best 10 as your grade for Hw. 5. Extra credits: Linear Algebra Youtuber is a way to have more credits by taking videos about explanation of the detailed process for homework assignment problems. The detail will be announced on the first day of class.
Mainly, we will use 1. Gilbert Strang, Introduction to Linear algebra, International edition, Wellesley-Cambridge Press. ISBN: 978-1-7331466-0-9. The below are for your references: 2. Sergei Treil, Linear Algebra Done Wrong, 2017 3. Sheldon Axler, Linear Algebra Done Right, 2015
