The course aims to develop graduate students’ ability to write academic research papers in English. Course content will cover the language conventions and thinking skills associated with writing research papers. Upon completing this course, students will be able to: a) improve the writing and critical thinking skills for academic success, b) be familiar with the content and organization of a research paper, c) use correct grammar, appropriate vocabulary, and a variety of advanced sentence structures to communicate ideas effectively in research papers, d) locate appropriate information sources using online and campus resources.
Enrollment will be given to students who show up in the first class meeting. Email the instructor if you are not able to attend the first class meeting to reserve your seat.
Students should come to the class with the assigned readings and homework assignments completed and are expected to actively participate in class time activities. To receive full credit, students must arrive to class on time and participate for the full session. Only 3 excused absences are allowed. After that, 20 points will be taken away from your attendance grade for each of your absence. Notify the instructor if you will be unable to participate. The “Genre Analysis” assignment asks you to analyze the information elements included in each research paper. The assignment template is available on e3. Download the template and type your responses in MS Word. Bring a print out to the class for discussion and submission. Unless noted, late assignment submission will result in lower grades. The "Generic Sentence Patterns for Research Papers” assignment asks you to collect skeleton sentence structures commonly used in each section of research papers. You will collect a minimum of 10 sentence patterns commonly used in each section of research papers (more is better) from the journal articles you read throughout the semester. The assignment is due on week 16. However, the instructor will ask you to present your progress in the middle of the academic term. Students will select a topic of their research interests to write up an Introduction for a research paper in English. Your Introduction should be typed as a MS Word document and follow the appropriate format of academic English writing. It is highly recommended that you consult your academic mentor to select an appropriate topic for your research paper. Midterm and Final exams will take place in an open-book format during class time. You may bring a dictionary, the textbook, and the course materials with you in the exam.
