Beyond idiosyncratic irregularities, variation in speech oftentimes reflects systematic linguistic changes triggered by grammatical and/or sociolinguistic structures. This seminar is designed to explore conditioning factors modulating variable patterns of speech production and perception, centering around the following themes: • Topic-based shifting • Expectation-based shifting • Covariation between multiple linguistic variables Taiwan, despite its small population, boasts a diverse range of spoken languages and offers a chance to examine a rich set of natural data of linguistic variants. While familiarizing students with the current theories and experimental methodology that can be used to effectively address theoretical questions, the seminar ultimately aims to help students develop their own research questions based on their experiences with native and local languages and determine viable methodologies to test their hypotheses. This class presupposes that students have already had a solid knowledge of phonetics and phonology.
