Research Methods and Thesis Writing is designed for students in the M.A. TESOL program, as they learn to understand and conduct research in the field of applied linguistics and in other related areas. This course is also designed to introduce the components, processes, and mechanics of writing a research paper. The goal of this course is to prepare students to critically evaluate published research in their interested areas and to design their own research studies. At the beginning of the semester, the discussions will focus on general topics of research design and thesis writing. Following the general introductions, we will spend most of the semester discussing quantitative/qualitative research techniques and research paper writing strategies. To introduce each of the techniques of research design and thesis writing, students will be guided to read and discuss textbook chapters and examples from the published papers that have used that specific technique/strategy. By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Understand different types of research 2. Identify and construct research questions 3. Select an appropriate method to collect research data 4. Apply an appropriate technique to analyze research data 5. Evaluate and criticize research methods used in published studies 6. Develop academic writing skills 7. Be familiar with the content and organization of a research paper 8. Be familiar with the vocabulary and grammar features of academic writing
