This course aims to introduce the theoretical development, issues, and pedagogical practice of second language (L2) writing. The course is comprised of three parts: In the first part, we will survey essential theories and current issues in the field of L2 writing. In the second part, we focus on writing pedagogy by evaluating textbooks, developing course syllabus/lesson plans, designing activities, gaining hands-on experience in real classrooms, and evaluating student writing. In the last part, we tap into research methodology to do studies in L2 writing. It is expected that by the end of the course, you will be able to (1) elaborate key theories in L2 writing, (2) name current issues in L2 writing, (3) evaluate writing textbooks, (4) design feasible course syllabus/lesson plans (5) design effective activities for L2 writing, (6) demonstrate teaching strategies in real classrooms, and (7) critique research studies in L2 writing.
