電影與媒體研究:議題與方法

Since feminist scholars established film and media studies as a legitimate subject of study in the rather conservative academia in the 1970s, cinema and media studies as a distinct academic discipline already has a unique history and its own theories and methods after decades of development. This course will introduce students major research issues and methods in Cinema and Media Studies. It will also train students to develop critical skills to analyze cinema and other visual and technological media. The goal is that students who are interested in working on film and media yet do not have a chance to receive academic training in cinema and media studies can have a basic understanding of the field. 作為一個新興但獨立與專業的學術研究領域 ,在1970年代由女性主義電影學者建立的電影與媒體研究領域經過數十年的發展,除了已有自己的領域基本功,也早已有了自身特殊的理論史、理論脈絡、研究史與研究方法。本課程的設計,便是給對做電影與媒體研究有興趣、但在研究所與大學部階段並無機會接受電影與媒體研究領域訓練的學生,引介此獨立而專業的學術領域的一些最基本的關切議題與方法。在引介此領域知識的同時,授課教師也會培養學生的領域基本功 ─ ─ 是的,不僅讀懂電影與媒體理論需要訓練,要真能看懂並能分析視覺與影音媒體,更需要專業訓練。

1. All course readings are in English. Students may choose to write their course assignments in English or Chinese. 2. The course is open to M.A. and Ph.D. students. For undergrad students: Welcome to join us, yet please have my permission first. 3. No auditors, please. 4. Class enrollment limit: 15 students.

We will read crucial theoretical texts in cinema and media studies and discuss film/video assignments in class. I will also demonstrate how to analyze audiovisual texts *as a professional researcher* to students, so that those taking the course can finally have a sense of the skills one must have before embarking on their own journey to work on cinema and other visual and technological media. 我們每週均會閱讀電影與媒體研究的重要文本;在許多週的課程裡,也會觀看及討論重要影像與影音文本。教師並且會示範與帶領學生拆解這些影像/影音文本,使得修課學生可學習真正專業的的影像與聲音的分析技藝,進入視覺與影像媒體研究的廣袤世界。

This course is a graduate seminar, meaning I expect students to be active participants rather than passive consumers in the class. 1. In-class presentation: 20% Students should take turns presenting their reading of weekly assigned materials each week. Those not giving a presentation should also read the materials in advance. 2. Weekly notes + class participation: 20% Students should upload their notes on course readings and films every two weeks. (For undergrad students: every four weeks.) 3. Course assignments: 20 % Students who take this course will have two course assignments. 4. Oral presentation of the final project: 20% + a short term paper: 20% - Students should use the theories they have learned in class to analyze films, moving-image works, or other media/art forms. They may also use films, moving-image works, or media/art texts of their choice to complicate or problematize theory. * Those who have backgrounds in art-/media- making may produce a film/video work, make a work of art, design a computer game, or curate a mini film series or exhibition, et cetera, as the final project for the course, provided they have discussed the project with the instructor in advance. 5. No auditors, please. 6. No plagiarism in any course assignments. Those caught with plagiarism will get a “zero” as their final course grade. * * * * * * 本課以研究所討論課(seminar)的形式進行。同學須是課堂上的主動參與者,而不是被動的消費者。因此除了期中與期末作業,主動參與課堂討論亦是學生學習與教師評量的重點。 1. 課堂口頭報告:20% 修課同學必須輪流在課堂上做口頭報告。報告內容為當週閱讀之文獻。 沒有報告的同學亦應讀完課堂要求閱讀之文獻,並參與討論。 2. 閱讀與觀影筆記:20% 修課同學須針對課程閱讀與觀影文獻書寫筆記,並上傳於Discord的每週頻道。 研究生:至少每二週一次;大學部至少每四週一次。 3. 期中作業:20% 修課學生會有兩個期中小作業。 4 期末口頭報告: 20% + 期末分析小論文:20% 修課同學在期末需做一個口頭報告,向全班報告自己期末小論文欲分析的電影與媒體影像文本。 期末小論文則為電影與媒體分析。同學自行選擇一個影像文本,以課堂討論之美學視角、關切議題或理論出發,分析此一電影與媒體文本。 *有創作背景的同學可以以電影或錄像作品、其他形式媒體或藝術作品、遊戲設計、影像或其他藝術形式策展等方式取代期末論文;先與授課教師討論並取得同意即可。 5. 本課強調主動性學習,修課同學的積極參與至關重要,故不接受旁聽。 6. 恪守學術倫理是所有研究的基本,因此本課有嚴格學術倫理要求。違反學術倫理者,期末成績以0分計算.

1. As usual, we will activiely utilize social media as our virtual class discussion space. For this semester, we use Discord: 1111 MI in Cinema and Media Studies @ Discord 如同以往,我們有自己的課程虛擬空間;本學期使用 Discord. 2. The course mainly focuses on audiovisual and technological media.
