This is a course of 3 credit units for graduate and senior undergraduate students. The goal of this course is to provide an in-depth introduction to the fundamental concepts and techniques in high-frequency circuit design for wireless systems. It used to be discrete components applicable to high-frequency circuit design. As the technology advances, it becomes feasible to operate semiconductor devices, especially CMOS, at the radio frequencies for applications of wireless communications, radar detection, and imaging systems. In the past few decades the techniques of integrated circuit design have been extensively developed such that some circuit schemes are adequate as the initial design to meet system requirement. The course begins with the basic concept of RF microelectronics and performance characterization of circuit components at high frequencies. Several functional blocks are discussed, including low-noise amplifier, mixer, oscillator, and power amplifier. It will give a brief overview of transceiver architectures. Design consideration for both CMOS and BJT devices will be discussed. Circuit simulation will be required for homework assignments and the term project using a design kit.
