The class will begin with the basic mathematical materials required and a brief introduction to quantum mechanics necessary for the rest of the course. We then cover the basic concepts of quantum information processing using the quantum circuit model. Some quantum algorithms and protocols will be discussed, such as quantum Fourier transform, phase estimation, Shor's quantum factoring algorithm and Grover's search algorithm. Then we introduce the quantum noise model decoherence, quantum error correction. The theory of quantum error-correcting codes and the idea of fault-tolerant quantum computation will then follow. A brief overview of current quantum technology development around the world will be introduced. Finally, we briefly introduce the notions of entropy and information in quantum information theory and quantum cryptography.
