In this course, we will go though the basic knowledge and skills to work with soft matter. The 1st part of the course is a series of introductory talks about the physical properties of soft matter and liquid crystals, including phase transitions, topology, electromagnetism, optics, fluid dynamics, how chemical composition changes the physical properties, amphiphile, and spontaneous self assembling micro structures. The 2nd part introduces the four typical liquid crystal operation modes, which are In-Plane-Switching (IPS), Vertically Aligned (VA), Electrically Controlled Birefringence (ECB), and Twisted Nematic (TN). We will analyze the cell structure, the materials, the assembly, the operation, and their characteristic properties. The 3rd part of the course introduces the natural and engineered soft matter optoelectronics, such as, displays, lens, laser, photonic crystals (optical transistors and pigments), electronic nose (gas sensors), electronic skins and tattoos (tactile sensor and lab on the skin), soft robots, topological soft matter (new phases of material), liquid crystal in plants, biomineralization, phase transition mediated tissue formation, and biomass electronic materials.
