The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students’ ability to write well-developed paragraphs of college writing. Students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view).For writing, students will build their paragraph writing skills and eventually learn to the ability to write a five paragraph essay following logical division of ideas.

1 Attendance & in-class quizzes:25% Regular quizzes on basic academic vocabulary are conducted. Role call will be done in the beginning of every class. Being 30 minutes late will be regarded as absence. 1 point will be deducted from your final academic grade for each unexcused absence. A valid proof is required for any excused absence. 2. Midterm: 30% There will be a formal in-class midterm based on the reading and writing materials covered in class. 3. Writing assignments: there will be two writing tasks 20% In-class discussion and Group presentation are made weekly. Students are required to actively participate in those activities and finish the assigned task. 4. Students are required to compile a Final Reading and writing portfolio, covering all the skills and notes in reading and writing discussed in class. A feedback to this course of at least 120 words is needed and to be placed at the end page of this portfolio.
