The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students' ability to write well-developed academic writing. Students will read a variety of text styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading on different topics (e.g., environmental studies, economics, and global studies). One of the aims of this course is to help students generate their writing ideas through an online knowledge-building forum where they can contribute and reorganize their ideas with their peers. Eventually, students can build up solid ideas for finishing their academic essays.
修畢英文基礎課程或具備等同CEFR B1-B2(含以上)英語文能力。本課程著重閱讀策略之訓練及撰寫英文議論文體之文章,無法確實參與課程、完成線上輔助學習活動及準時完成五篇學術文章寫作者,請勿選修!! 備註1:選課系統上之正選生若第一次上課未出席也未事先完成缺課請假程序,將視同放棄修課權利,名額將直接由候補者遞補。 備註2:第一堂課未出席的非正選生,若自行於系統加選會由教師退選! 有特殊狀況請來信告知。 備註3:欲加簽本課程的同學,請務必出席第一次上課(本課程為實體課程,上課地點為交大校區綜合一館)方能取得候補資格,若有特殊狀況也請來信告知,自行於系統加選候補會由教師退選。
(1) Attendance: * Attend classes and participate in/out of class activities actively. * Late arrivals and unexcused absence 3 times without prior approval or official reasons will affect your attendance mark. (2) Participation: * You are required to read assigned material (e.g. handout, website articles) before coming to class. * Active participation in classroom or online discussions and activities is also highly expected and required. (2) Assignments: * Turn in each writing assignment on time. Scores will be deducted for late assignments. You will be asked to turn in the late assignment within one week. (3) Class Etiquette and Participation: * Turn off your cell phones during class ABSOLUTELY. Each cell phone ringing during class may affect the score in “participation”. * Dozing off will affect your grade. (4) Others * The details of writing assignments and learning activities will be given in the weekly course schedule and E3. * Adjustments may be made in the syllabus to meet students' needs and course requirements. * Intellectual Property Right: Use only copyrighted textbooks in class.
Students should be aware that attendance is mandatory for all parts of the course. Final grades will be calculated upon the following: Participation (10%) Self-study (20%) Academic Essay Writing (AEWs) (50%) Online discussion forum performance and presentation (20%) As a major objective of the course is to improve English reading and writing, great emphasis will be placed on idea generation and academic essay writing skills. As part of the self-study component of the course, students will be required to read 5 academic essays (argumentative, comparison and contrast, cause and effects...) and finish the essay outlines.

Due to the current, topical, and varied nature of the course content, there is no set textbook for the course. However, authentic reading materials will be chosen from online resources or newspapers, acting as the basis for reading comprehension and writing topics.
