課程概述與目標: *1. 選課前務必閱讀課綱,確認自己學習需求,了解課程學習目標和要求,再進行選課。 *2. 加退選期間亦請由選課系統選課,無課堂加簽 (除語言中心規定之特殊資格學生外) Course Goal and Description: Being able to read and write English critically is crucial for someone who desires to succeed academically and professionally. This course aims to increase learners' competence and awareness in reading English, and by integrating reading strategies, to build their paragraph writing skills and ultimately progress to the ability of writing academic essays. To fulfill this goal, learners are about to read and analyze a variety of texts with a critical perspective, reinforce the reading contents through paraphrasing, summarizing, and expressing opinions by writing paragraphs and five-paragraph essays. A focus on language forms will also be provided to ensure a clear and lucid delivery of thoughts. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, learners are expected to: 1. read with a large degree of independence, using dictionaries and other reference sources selectively when necessary. 2. understand, synthesize and evaluate the information and arguments in a wide range of lengthy, complex texts where stated opinions and implied points are discussed. 3. paraphrase, summarize, and cite information from the source materials 4. develop paragraph writing skills and ultimately progress to write five-paragraph essays in an organized manners and with support of evidence and examples. 5. write clear texts with good grammatical control and sentence variety.

Course Rules: (1) Come prepared for the best learning outcome. Preview each reading and assigned sections before class. Students should always bring pens, pencils, paper notebooks or loose-leaf paper to keep notes. (2) Attend all class sessions every week on time, and orally participate in class activities. Being late for 20 minutes is considered absent for that hour of class sessions. If you are frequently late and absent without official reasons and proof, you are making the result of 'in-class participation' suffer. (3) Students must be responsible for find out what you have missed if absent. Absence from any class session is not an excuse for not knowing assignment submission and what has been announced in that session. Please exchange your contact number with at least one of the classmates, and contact the classmate for what you will miss, or have missed. (4) Late assignment policy: * Each assignment has its requirements. Students get the score for that assignment only when it meets requirements. If you have written similar assignments, you need to rewrite it based on what you have been taught in this class and so you can get scores. * Every mandatory assignment loses 10% of that assignment per day when it is late (including weekends). Late assignments are not accepted via email submission, and in this case, do not email to the teacher for explanations. Plan your time ahead, and hand in your assignments on time. * Requests for ‘learning tasks’ make-up are not allowed. All of the in-class activities must be completed and handed in during class sessions. * Requests for 'oral presentation' make-up are not allowed. Presentations are scheduled when students come to sign up. If you have any problem with the presentation date, please come to fix the date beforehand. (5) If you were failed previously in this course and are considering to retake it in the new semester, you must read the updated syllabus closely. You must be able to write all the assignments over, complete new learning tasks and fulfill the new course requirements. You cannot submit the assignments you wrote or completed previously. If you keep using similar versions that do not meet the current requirements, you will not get scores and might be flunked again. (6) This syllabus is subject to change. The teacher reserves the right to make adjustments for pending tasks in response to learners' needs.
Course Requirements and Evaluation: 1. In-class participation (attendance, oral participation, quizzes or in-class writing assignments, etc. ) 15% 2. Reading and writing assignments 25% 3. Online self-study 10% 4. Mid-term exam 20% 5. Final exam 25% 6. Presentation 5% *In-class participation (Assessment 1): You will be engaged in various learning activities in class. Attend all class sessions on time to ensure you take control of every part of the study in this course. Orally participate in class to earn points for yourselves, and no free points for this item! *Mandatory Reading and Writing Assignments (Assessment 2): 1. Read simplified academic articles, news articles, and complete exercises in class or as homework. 2. Independently read 1-2 extensive academic or news articles based on individual needs every month. 3. Keep a reading journal online by writing summary and response paragraphs for each reading article. 4. Study five types of academic essays, identify organizations, complete the essay outlines. 5. Eventually show your progress and ability to write one five-paragraph essay individually. *Online self-study practices (Assessment 3) Students should log in iQ online classroom using the access code on the back of cover page of the textbook, and complete online practices for assigned practices and/or self-selected practices. The learning results will be collected twice, Week 10 and 17. *Mid-term and final exam (Assessment 4, 5) Each of the exam will test you on two units: mid-term exam is based on Unit 1 and 3, and final exam on Unit 5 and 7. The test sections include vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and writing. Final exam includes five-paragraph essay writing.
