Writing is a social practice. Writing should be closely related to literacies in real world. Thus, the course, framed by genre-based approaches, aims to help you develop advanced writing competence through writing in different genres. A genre means "a staged, goal-oriented, purposeful activity in which speakers engage as members of our culture." (Martin, 1984, p. 25). Genre-based approaches in this course help you raise genre awareness and build genre knowledge. It measns that you will experience various types of writing tasks that you are encounting or will encount in the real world, including email writing, academic writing, online writing, stories, discipline-oriented writing and a lot more. you will learn how to analyze the writing task and how to respond to writing tasks with appropriate forms, content, rhetorical components, and lexical-grammatical accuracy. It is expected that by the end of the course, you will be able to 1. analyze the required genre knowledge of different wriitng tasks; 2. respond to writing tasks with appropriate forms, content, vocabulary, and grammar; 3. use effective writing devices to improve unity, cohesion and coherence of your writing; 4. diagnose your common writing problems/errors; 5. reduce common problems/errros; 6. give constructive comments on others’ writing; and 7. work effectively and collaboratively with others.
