概述

(1) Students are to acquire certain level of overall understanding of Smart Manufacturing. (2) Students are to gain exposure of real-world manufacturing processes (laser cutting, for example) and issues at the (a) work cell (工作站), (b) production line (生產線), (c) machine shop (工廠車間), (d) corporation (公司企業) level. (3) Students are to be aware of the technology and methods available to lessen the manufacturing obstacles as well as to improve the productivity at each level. (4) Students are to grasp further about the Industry 4.0 (工業4.0, IIoT) and see how it can help manufacturing today and future (5) Students to possibly gain hand-on experience for Industry 4.0 or system integration on selected device(s) if equipment/device available This course is NOT to teach students details of "system solution" or "architectural structure" for an individual manufacturing problem, because each real-world manufacturing problem would typically take many months of team effort. This is not possible at school, so instead an overall introduction of subjects is offered, such as artificial intelligence (machine learning), big data, automation, optimization, Industry 4.0, blockchain, and others. Students will be asked to (1) investigate particular issues assigned by the teacher as homework after teacher's overall introduction, and present the finding in the next week class (probably not everyone given the time limitation), (2) use optimization method and/or programming (e.g. C++) to solve a real-world "smart manufacturing" problem, (3) use Machine Learning (Python) method to predict a real-world manufacturing problem. The final project (no final exam in this course) will require students present his/her report in front of the entire class. Verbal communication is pivotal to the future success of students in my opinion. Students should clearly explain what his/her chosen topic is, how the issue is handled, and some possible steps or directions of improvement.

(1) Machine Shop Practice (工廠實習) recommended, (2) English – reading and writing English PPT a must, preferable capable of verbal conversation but not necessary (基本的英語讀聽寫能力), (3) Some programming (C++, Python, Matlab, C#, Java, etc.) experience necessary, (4) Math - Calculus or simple Algebra (基本的微積分或代數), (5) Engineering Drawing (工程圖學) recommended

(1) PPT slides through overhead projector (2) videos through overhead projector (3) students should be personal laptop for homework (programming, machine learning), (4) teacher will issue "investigation" subject for students to research (gather information, report, and possible presentation) after teacher's in-class presentation, (5) a midterm (test or project) + a final project (6) 1 TA (助教), Students are encouraged to seek information on website, books, data archive (網站或圖書及資料庫) as specified in the textbook and reference book, or search on websites (Google search) Possible field trip by bus to Taichung or other city

Attendance + Quiz (in class) 10% Homework 25% Midterm test or project 25% Final project & presentation 40% (The percentage of each item above could be slightly modified based on real situation in the semester) --- Note 1: Service to this class (as teamwork contribution) will be rewarded with extra points (學生之班級服務貢獻將可作為課業成績之加分考量) Note 2: Teacher has the unlimited right to adjust student’s final score at teacher’s full discretion (任課教師有評定成績之最後決定權, 包含 加分/減分)
