This course is mainly for first-year students majored in Biomedical Imaging and Radiological Sciences. By cooperation with the Practice of Genetic Engineering opened by Dr. Hui-Yen Chuang in our department, this course is to assist students to access the knowledge of life science at molecular level and the importance of this discipline in modern radiobiology and radiation oncology. The basic methods of molecular biological research are also involved in this class for students to independently conduct experiments, including transformation, plasmid extraction and preparation, plasmid mapping, electrophoresis, and polymerase chain reaction (if time is allowed). In summary, this course will offer the general knowledge of nucleic chemistry, genetics, DNA replication, recombination, damage and repair, gene transcription and translation, protein production and modification, mutation and carcinogenesis, genomics microarray and genetic engineering.
Optional: General Biology (for students who never attend biological related courses in high school.
This course include 16 weeks of lectures (2h per week) and at least 4 hours of experimental practice of basic molecular biological research as mentioned above. The students will be assigned to all lecturers of this course depending on how many students are taking this course. The teacher will have their own plans to have students joining the experimental practice, but all students must hand in the experimental reports no matter which lecturer is selected or assigned.
Class attend: 10% Midterm and Final: 30% each Experimental course and reports: 30%
