This course attempts to provide a comprehensive introduction to advanced statistical topics: linear regression, experimental design and statistical quality control. It emphasizes on principles, models, methods and solutions which are most likely encountered and used by graduate students in their study for engineering and sciences. It particularly emphasizes the analysis of variance (ANOVA) for different statistical topics. Through examples, homework, project and classroom presentation, students can exercise their mind, clarify the concepts and sophisticate their skills. It is expected that students are able to apply the underlying principles for solving real problems after this course. The field of statistics deals with the collection, presentation, analysis, and use of data to make decisions and solve problems. Because many aspects of engineering practice involve working with data, obviously some knowledge of statistics is important to any engineer. Specifically, statistical techniques can be a powerful aid in designing new products and systems, improving existing designs, and designing, developing, and improving production processes. This course will provide a practical approach oriented to engineering as well as sciences. Students learn how the analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be relevant to the topics through the integration of unique problem sets that reflect realistic applications and situations. The lectures focuses on real engineering applications and real engineering solutions while including material on the bootstrap, increased emphasis on the use of P-value, coverage of equivalence testing, combining p-values. By introducing analysis of variance, the statistical methods help us describe and understand variability. By variability, we mean that successive observations of a system or phenomenon do not produce exactly the same result. Statistical thinking can give us a useful way to incorporate this variability into our decision-making processes. Some advanced topics in this course include: Statistical Inference for More than Two Samples (review of analysis of variance) Simple Linear Regression and Correlation Multiple Linear Regression Design and Analysis of Single-Factor Experiments: The Analysis of Variance Introduction to Non-parametric Statistics

1. Attendance will be counted towards the final grades; therefore absence is strongly discouraged except for some personal reasons. Absence due to illness should be applied officially through the system. 2. No late homework.
Homework (15%), In-class presentation (10%), Mini project (20%), Test/Eam (55%)
