Technological changes change culture. Technology changes personal identities, social identities, history, memory, everyday life, and politics; it changes our understanding of who we are. In fact, technology changes the very way we think, but these changes are seldom thought about. Technology is so pervasive a part of life that we rarely even notice it. Instead, we take technology for granted. Technological change is not so much thought about as it is merely absorbed into culture and personal and social identity. Is technology authoritarian? Or is it our tool to help us? In this course we will read the thinking of a historian, a computer scientist, a novelist, a cyberpsychologist, an economist, and a neurologist, all of whom have thought about the effects of technology on social and cultural life. One author writes: “humans and technology collide”. Is that true? Is she being pessimistic? Should we think of the human brain as a technological marvel? Does technology make intimacy more possible, or does it separate persons into isolated ‘user’ units. The technologies we will study are principally the Internet, the iPhone, AI, Wikipedia, Google and the personal computer.
