1. Increase students' ability to use English while reading major philosophical works and fiction. 2. Increase students' critical analysis and English communication while discussing literature from genres including: fantasy, science fiction, and war. Students will learn to uncover universal existential themes. 3. Understand how fiction includes important ethical and spiritual dimensions that relate to what it means to be human and our notions of responsibility. 4. Enable students to write about the links between different philosophical and literary traditions
This course offers an introduction to readings of Indian Tantra and Buddhism concerning happiness and life's purpose. We will then read Western philosophy covering Stoicism, war, and killing. This will be followed by extracts from well-known fiction for related themes. Students will have the opportunity to analyze and discuss fiction in class as well as in a final essay.
1 group presentation per week supported by instructor individual midterm presentation 35% (3-5 min talk) final paper 35% (600-700 words) attendance 30%

Instructor provided course package which will include appropriate extracts. Given the time limitations of the course, students will not be expected to read the full text, but approximately 15 pages per week or less.
