Course Description: This course introduces Chinese-language contemporary media and studies how it circulates in different Chinese societies. Students will learn about the different media issues in the Chinese-speaking world, and be guided through discussions on some of the breaking news in Chinese media. This course will teach students to compare different types of media and analyze their impact on Chinese people’s lives and perspectives. Learning Outcomes: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of media in the modern Chinese-speaking world Students will be able to conduct research on a chosen media topic and use primary sources Students will be able to describe, compare, and analyze media (orally and in writing) using Chinese-language media sources Students will be able to discuss and debate issues regarding how the media impacts the daily lives of Chinese people Proficiency Targets: Speaking: Advanced-high Listening: Advanced-high Reading: Advanced-high Writing: Advanced-high Course Organization This semester, we will cover nine lessons. We will spend one large class period, one group class period, and one small class period on each lesson. Large Class Format This class meets once a week for a duration of 100 minutes. Each class period will focus on one or more of the following major tasks: studying vocabulary & grammar, discussions, listening practice, analyzing texts, and oral performance. We may incorporate other activities depending on the time and materials available. To prepare for this class, students will be required to listen to a recording, preview the class text, prepare vocabulary, and study for a comprehension quiz. Last, students will be required to complete the preview recording assignment (3%). Group Class Format This class meets once a week after the large class for a duration of 100 minutes. The first 50 minutes will be devoted to discussing the assigned materials from the large class. The last 50 minutes will be devoted to listening practice. To prepare, students will be required to post one question related to the assigned material 24 hours before the group class. In addition, students will be required to read other students’ questions to prepare for the discussion (3%). Individual Class Format This class meets once a week for a duration of 50 minutes. Students will have in-depth discussions related to the assigned materials with their instructor. To prepare, students must write an outline for and/or answer the assigned question(s) 24 hours before the class (3%). In addition, students are also required to share a report on one current event.

Attendance and Performance Policy: ● No make-ups for any missed quizzes, tests, exams, assignments, presentations, or classes due to any reason. ● 10 minutes late for class or leaving 10 minutes before the class ends will be counted as an absence. ● 3 absences for any reason from any section will receive a written warning, and a meeting with the Center will be required. ● 5 absences for any reason from any section will receive a zero for attendance and participation for this class (30%). ● If anything happens that prevents you from attending/participating in class, it is your responsibility to communicate with the instructor before the class. If you need any assistance, please let the instructor know before the class. ● All the classes will be offered in person. ● Performance grade of each class depends on students' participation, pronunciation, vocabulary & grammar, and overall impression.
