概述

This course is designed to enhance students' understanding of the shape of Taiwan society and culture and of ability representing Taiwan in international communication. Rather than a sociology and cultural studies, this course is history class. The main idea is from what Taiwan was to understand what Taiwan is and will be. This course is mainly a lecture but mixed in-class discussion. This course highly encourages students to discuss multiple topics to help students to further understand Taiwan. By taking this course, students will be expected to answer three questions: what was Taiwan, what is Taiwan, what Taiwan will be? Students will be required to read materials and readings in advance, and these materials will include primary sources and secondary sources. By reading and analyzing these materials, this course expects students to understand the culture and society behind these materials. All activities will be conducted in English, and instructor highly encourages students to give your opinions and ideas to contribute to this course in English in any time. In each class, students will be required to read at least one academic article. Also, the instructor might assign a primary text, a video, or a picture as the core of each class to direct students to discuss culture and society in Taiwan. This course is welcome students to share your opinions, experiences, and ideas in any time. By taking this course, I inspire students to know Taiwan, in a broader definition, more deeply and to construct a crystal clear view of culture and society in Taiwan.

先修科目

English-language ability is required, preferably intermediate level or above.

教學方式

1. Five-Min Presentation Knowing a biography of a historical figure is one of the most efficient ways to understand Taiwan culture and society. Thus, each student will select on a character from “Taiwan history” and create a five-minute presentation with one, basic side (Your name, the subject's name and image). NO VIDEO, NO ANIMATION, NO AUDIO, and NO GOING OVER TIME. A similar presentation takes place every year in the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. You can find further information at https://threeminutethesis.uq.edu.au/. In this course, this presentation aims to help your peers to understand important characters in Taiwan, and also aims to foster the presenter's ability to distill large amounts of information and present it in a brief, coherent fashion. Students are welcome to consult with me for more advice, including finding books, style, etc., regarding their presentations. Students are welcome to present more than once to gain extra credit. List is below. 2. In-class Activities Students are required to read a book review every week and participate to discussion. Students are also welcome to ask questions and contribute ideas at any point in the class. I will take absences and other class behaviors into consideration when assigning grades. 3. 2,000-3,000 word Final Paper In this class, students are required to write ONE 2,000-3,000 word essay as the final paper. This final paper must focus on one/many cultural or social phenomenon of your hometown. In this paper, I encourage students to investigate any form of cultural and social facts. I will value your paper based on students’ analyses, investigation, and understanding of the topic. By working on this paper, I am looking forward to seeing students to know your hometown from multiple perspectives and, of course, more deeply. This essay has to BE SUBMITTED THROUGH E3 SYSTEM. The deadline is due by 5/30 11:50 pm. NO DELAY is allowed.
