This survey course introduces students to some major authors and literary works in American literature, from 1865 to the present. We will highlight texts related to issues such as realism and naturalism, local color, modernism and modernity, and the representation of social differences (age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, and so on) in postbellum American literature.

Policies Class Attendance and Participation 1. You have to sit in the same seat for this course. Our teaching assistant Rita 陳湘勻 (rita80579@gmail.com) will keep track of your attendance. 2. If you have to miss classes for legitimate reasons (official or sick leave), please let Rita and me know in advance/in person. I will not count your legitimate leave as absence unless there are more than THREE times. 3. Attending all classes does not necessarily mean that you will get all the points. You have to participate by asking/answering questions. Individual/Group Report 1. On our schedule, you will see a dual report system: the numeral in brackets ([1], [2], [3], and so on) are for group reports; the alphabetic in brackets ([A], [B], [C], and so on) are for individual reports. 2. Among the texts for group reports, some are for two people and others for three (marked with †). In a group report, the members have to introduce an author, summarize an assigned reading, and point out important themes in 15 minutes. In an individual report, one student needs to summarize the story and show us crucial topics in 10 minutes. Unless you report in a careless manner, you obtain 80–100 points for your one-time report. Response Papers You have to turn in two one-page (single-spaced) response papers. In each response paper, highlight one passage in our readings, contextualize the passage, and explicate the passage. You could write in Chinese or English. See E3 for more instructions. Mid-Term and Final Exams You might be asked to identify passages and interpret them, define literary terms, answer essay questions, and/or put your literary knowledge into practice.
Class Attendance and Participation: 10% Individual/Group Report: 10% Two Response Papers: 10% each Midterm and Final Exams: 30% each
