The properties of various chemical compounds are closely related to the form and symmetry. A deep understanding of molecular symmetry is indispensable in understanding the basics of chemistry and analyzing chemical and physical properties of substances. In fact, the symmetry of molecular orbital and vibration, the degeneracy of energy levels, selection rules, etc., can all be determined by the molecular symmetry. Group theory is applying mathematics to the analysis of the symmetry of a substance to understand its physical and chemical properties. The course will start from the basics of group theory and extend into symmetry operations and elements, molecular symmetry groups, and expressions and eigenvalues.
Students must have basic knowledge of physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry.
