Discourse analysis is a broad and complex interdisciplinary field, which encompasses diverse theoretical and methodological approaches from linguistics, sociology, and anthropology. This course will focus on three approaches that are most relevant to discourse of talk-in-interaction: Conversation Analysis (CA), which examines the micro structure of talk-in-interaction; Language Socialization (LS), which examines how talk-in-interaction is interconnected with culture and social categories; and Language and Power, which examines how social inequality is mediated through talk-in-interaction. Students will learn how these approaches have been used to understand classroom interactions, online interactions, and interviews and how discursive practices are interrelated with learning, identity construction, and the macro sociocultural and political forces. The overall goals of this course are for students to gain: • An appreciation for the use of discourse analysis in research in general and L2 classroom research in particular. • An expansion of research repertoires to include discourse analytic approaches to research. • Insights that will inform and improve classroom teaching and human communication.
None.
1. Be an active participant (speaking and listening) in class. 2. Collect one or more pieces of discourse data (e.g. classroom interactions, interviews, online interactions, etc.). You will post your data (and transcript) on E3 (under "Forum/討論區") together with a brief video explaining your data. We will apply our readings to this class corpus. They are as important to our learning as the readings. 3. Complete the readings for each class and be ready to discuss them in class. 4. Complete 4 out of 7 short assignments [Assignments 1-7] in the form of a short paper (2-4 pages), podcast, or vlog, applying readings to data. 5. Do one presentation of an article or a chapter. 6. Do one oral presentation on your final project. 7. Complete a final project. The final project can be in different forms: a paper of a mini empirical study, a research proposal, a literature review, a video, a podcast or any other creative endeavor that you want to take up. We can explore possibilities together. The final project can also be an extension of one of the assignments. A final project proposal is due in week 10.
