Modern Methods of Optical Spectroscopy

Spectroscopy, the measurement of the interaction between light with matter, has played an essential role in wild applications in our daily life. Advances in this field have contributed to the development of lasers, gas sensing, single-molecule sensors, telescopes for exoplanet discovery, medical devices, etc. In each topic of this course, besides theoretical concepts and experimental techniques, we will also check real manuals from commercial instruments and explore new ideas through discussions on interesting papers. We will focus more on the advances of new spectroscopic techniques by literature review instead of reading textbooks. At the end of this course, students will be expected to have a basic knowledge of laser spectroscopy and have ideas about how most spectroscopy instruments work. Also, I hope this class will bring together students from a variety of interests or probably different backgrounds, and we will practice communicating across disciplines based on our understanding of optical spectroscopy.
It would be helpful with a background in lasers, optics, and atomic/molecular physics, but not necessary.
