The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to various heat transfer mechanisms and analyses for engineering students. The fundamentals and applications of conductive, radiative, and combined-mode heat transfer will be discussed. The modeling of thermal systems will be practiced by a term project (must be modern world associated). By the end of the semester, students are expected to be able to: 1. Analyze engineering problems via mathematic approaches 2. Write governing equations for physical problems including actual systems 3. Solve the governing equations by mathematical techniques 4. Explain the physical meanings of mathematical equation/calculations. 5. Improve English listening and reading skills and be ready to take more EMI courses 6. Use communication skills and work as a team
Preferably engineering mathematics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.
A. All of the course materials will be available on e3 including syllabus, lecture notes, homework solutions, and the grades. All materials covered in class will be repeated again in mandarin right after the English version. B. Homework are graded by effort not by correctness while all late submissions (after solution posted) receive only half of the total points. Late submissions will not be accepted if it is not regarding the upcoming exam. C. All exams will be given first individually (graded individually) and then in groups of 4 (graded in groups) with computer & software access. The final score of each exam will be calculated via the combined score of the individual and group exams. Group formations for both exams are the same as term project groups. D.Term project will be graded in groups of 4. All students are required to participate in proposal presentation, final presentation, and report writing or no points will be given to respective subjects even though they should be graded in groups. Part of the score will be given based on the fund each group raised during the presentations. ※ For all quarantined or sick leave students as well as those who are taking this course remotely, recorded lectures will be posted on e3 (only for the students in need). But in order to make sure all students are on the same page, lectures will only be available for a week on e3.
