Course Description This course aims to introduce major global issues in our contemporary world, particularly focusing on how global actors address the latest global issues. It is designed to nurture, facilitate and enhance students’ general comprehension of our global society. We live in an increasingly globalized world, which generates both opportunities and challenges. Nowadays, few countries and people could isolate themselves from the impacts of the outside world. The significance of the course is to augment students’ interests and abilities in realizing how and what the global society is composed of, operated, and governed. Hence, this course covers several crucial subjects, including international organizations, non-governmental organizations, multinational corporations, international migration, terrorism, cyber-attack, etc. Through lectures and class discussion, students will have a deeper understanding of major issues in our contemporary world, while developing their critical thinking, unique perspectives, and analytical abilities on different global issues. Objectives of the Course By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Develop advanced understanding regarding major issues in our contemporary world, and long-lasting interests in the development of global affairs; 2. Familiarize with and utilize various perspectives to comprehend major global issues; 3. And increase the abilities of critical thinking, argument-making, and deliberate discourse.
Competent in English. Students who have taken "Contemporary World"(當代世界) cannot take this course.
1. The course will be conducted by the instructor’s lecture with PPT presentations, combined with the agenda-guided class discussion. Students need to be fully prepared and be familiar with the assigned readings before the class. 2. E3 teaching website and Facebook class discussion forum will be used.
