概述

課程概述與目標: *1. 選課前務必閱讀課綱,確認自己學習需求,了解課程學習目標和要求,再進行選課。 *2. 加退選期間亦請由選課系統選課,無課堂加簽 (除語言中心規定之特殊資格學生外) Course Goal and Description: Being able to read and write English critically is crucial for someone who desires to succeed academically and professionally. This course aims to increase learners' competence and awareness in reading English, and by integrating reading strategies, to build their paragraph writing skills and ultimately progress to the ability of writing academic essays. To fulfill this goal, learners are about to read and analyze a variety of texts with a critical perspective, reinforce the reading contents through paraphrasing, summarizing, and expressing opinions by writing paragraphs and five-paragraph essays. A focus on language forms will also be provided to ensure a clear and lucid delivery of thoughts. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, learners are expected to: 1. read with a large degree of independence, using dictionaries and other reference sources selectively when necessary. 2. understand, synthesize and evaluate the information and arguments in a wide range of lengthy, complex texts where stated opinions and implied points are discussed. 3. paraphrase, summarize, and cite information from the source materials 4. develop paragraph writing skills and ultimately progress to write five-paragraph essays in an organized manners and with support of evidence and examples. 5. write clear texts with good grammatical control and sentence variety.

教學方式

1. You are expected to carefully read and understand the information contained in this syllabus. This is like a rulebook and will contain what is required for successful completion of this class. 2. You always need to preview lessons before class every week. Come prepared for the best learning outcome. 3. Come to class regularly. If you are absent from any part of the class, it is your responsibility to ascertain what you missed. I recommend that you establish a reliable way to communicate with your classmates to help you with this. 4. Late work is not accepted without prior arrangement, and a penalty will be imposed, i.e. every assignment loses 10% of that assignment per day when it is late including weekends. It is the student’s responsibility to get work done on time. I also understand there are emergencies, so please communicate with me. 5. This syllabus is subject to change. The teacher reserves the right to make adjustments for pending tasks in response to learners' needs.

Course Requirements and Evaluation: 1. In-class participation 15% This category includes students’attendance, oral participation, and various in-class learning tasks students are engaged in. Attend all class sessions on time. Orally participate in class to earn points for yourselves; no free points for this item! 2. Reading and writing assignments 20% (1) Read text articles assigned and independently complete exercises as homework. (2) Participate in e3 discussion board.” Complete "Writing Discussion" by writing at least 3-5 responses in paragraphs with support from students’ regular readings. Students need to be able to reflect the proficiency level of progressing from the simple paragraph level to multiple integrated paragraphs. (3) Complete one 'structured' summary paragraph to display paraphrasing and summarizing skills. 3. Online practices and self-study 10% Students should log in iQ online classroom using the access code on the back of cover page of the textbook, and complete online practices for assigned and self-selected practices. 4. Mid-term exam 20% The written exam will test you on Unit 1, 2, and 3. The test sections include vocabulary, reading skills and comprehension, writing skills, and text comprehension. 5. Final exam and essay writing 25% The final exam has two parts. The first part is a written exam testing you on Unit 4, 5, and 7. The test sections include vocabulary, reading skills and comprehension, writing skills, and text comprehension. The second part is to write a five-paragraph opinion essay, which will be due on Week 17, separately from the week of the final written exam. 6. Presentation 10% Pairs orally summarize one text article, present the organization of the article and share your responses.
