Students who embody a wide vocabulary are believed to function well in normal English scenarios, and tend to succeed academically and professionally. The aim of the course is to develop students’ vocabulary in terms of range, accurate usage, spelling and pronunciation. The course will present students alternative strategies to understand and use accurate words and word phrases in different venues. Reading is undoubtedly the most effective tool to attain this goal. Theme-based reading materials are provided every week to systematically increase word knowledge, and to ensure the vocabulary presented in this course to be contextual and meaningful. Word study activities including definitions, synonyms and antonyms, completing the sentence, writing, vocabulary in the context, etc. will provide multiple and varied exposure to the taught words. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students should: 1. Understand the meaning of a wide range of vocabulary in language comprehension. 2. Be able to use words in a fluent and accurate way in language production. 3. Have developed vocabulary building skills that they can employ independently beyond classroom. 4. Have expanded their vocabulary that can be commensurate with the level needed for further studies or future employment.

1. You are expected to carefully read and understand the information contained in this syllabus. This is like a rulebook and will contain what is required for successful completion of this class. 2. You always need to preview lessons before class every week. Come prepared for the best learning outcome. 3. Come to class regularly. If you are absent from any part of the class, it is your responsibility to ascertain what you missed. I recommend that you establish a reliable way to communicate with your classmates to help you with this. 4. Late work is not accepted without prior arrangement, and a penalty will be imposed, i.e. every assignment loses 10% of that assignment when it is late including weekends. It is the student’s responsibility to get work done on time. I also understand there are emergencies, so please communicate with me. 5. This syllabus is subject to change. The teacher reserves the right to make adjustments for pending tasks in response to learners' needs.
1. In-class participation 10% 2. Text Presentation 10% Pairs will present text articles weekly, summarizing the main points and presenting key words and collocations. 3. Vocabulary and Reading Assignments 20% - Read 1-2 text articles weekly, and independently complete exercises in class or as homework. - Produce a personal vocabulary list by creating "Word Category,”and update the list at the end of every three units. The words on the list will be incorporated into students’writing and speaking in the assignment “Writing with Vocabulary, and “Words-in-Actions”presentation. - Complete "Writing with Vocabulary" for at least 3-5 entries, and each entry needs to incorporate at least one or two key words of each unit by addressing to the writing prompt. 4. Quizzes 35% Vocabulary knowledge from text articles will be assessed through review quizzes. Each review quiz will test students three text units. Pop quizzes will also be expected for certain units. 5. Words in actions presentation 25% To increase students' awareness of using the taught words, students will deliver works of production with the taught words twice. Students use the taught words: - Individually write a response to a writing prompt based on a specific text articles. - Collaboratively create a play based on one of the text articles, and stage the play in class. Appropriate vocabulary usage will be assessed through students’delivery.
