Course Overview & Objectives: This course is designed for students who are interested in studying abroad. The course focuses on academic study skills to make your study abroad experiences beneficial. In the course, you will develop authentic listening, note-taking, academic discussion, and presentation strategies that you need to be successful academically in foreign universities. You will learn about specific knowledge and skills to better understand lectures and predict content. This course will also assist you to use a visual to form and organize ideas into a chart to get the gist of your reading. The instructor will provide practical strategies for you to engage in a group or whole classroom discussions. Ultimately, while building your vocabulary and improving your language skills to achieve your academic goals, the instructor will introduce essential presentation strategies for you to deliver your ideas effectively and build rapport with your audience. Supplemental reading materials which ranges from campus life English will be provided based on your needs. • Listening Strategies: - Building background knowledge to better understand lectures and predict content. - Recognizing lecture language that signals: the topic/the big picture/a transition/a definition/an example/an explanation/important information. - Recognizing non-verbal signals for important information. • Note-taking Strategies: - Using symbols and abbreviations instead of full words. - Assessing, revising and editing your notes. - Using a visual form and Organizing ideas into a chart. - Referencing and quoting sources. • Academic Discussion Strategies: - Entering a discussion and Contributing ideas. - Agreeing and disagreeing. - Connecting your ideas to those of other students. - Bringing the group to a consensus. • Presentation Strategies: - Presentation structure. - Delivery style and using language effectively. - Building rapport with your audience. - Visual aids/Referring to charts and graphs.

2.教學方法及教學相關配合事項(如助教、網站或圖書及資料庫等) This course is student-centered. This means you are invited to be “Masters” not “Guests”. Preparation: You are required to read/scan the textbook or handouts before class. Participation: Active participation in classroom discussions and activities is essential to advance your English skills. Assignments & Tests: No late work will be accepted, and no make-up tests will be given unless it is for an official reason with prior approval. Attendance: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to learn what was done in class that day. Every absence will lower your attendance grade by 2 points (final score) and being late reduces it by 0.5 point (final score). More than 3 unexcused absences may cause you to fail the course. Exams: The mid-term (oral 40% / written exam 60%) will focus on reading comprehension, short answering questions, listening comprehension and speaking skills.
