醫師科學家暑期課程 (一)

This course covers selected topics of ion channel biophysics, from voltage-dependent channel gating to ion permeation, for students with a major interest in membrane physiology. Topics to be covered include membrane potential, voltage-dependent channel gating, ion channel blockers, ion permeation through channel pores, structure/function relationships of ion channels, stochastic behaviors of single ion channels, and structural biology of ion channels. The course consists of didactic lectures and discussion sessions of selected readings from classical literature and recent publications. The course also provides times for computer simulations and lab components for students to gain hands-on experience in ion channel research. This course is designed for advanced undergraduates who are interested in pursuing academic research. It requires quantitative reasoning to understand the course materials, though mathematical skills such as solving differential equations may not be needed. However, students are encouraged to have taken Biochemistry course. We expect that students participate actively in the course, and that they learn to read original papers critically.

The grading is based on three aspects: the daily class participation and paper discussions (50%), and a final written report (50%). It is impossible to pass the course without attending classes and actively discussing assigned papers.
