This course is devoted to providing master’s students with a comprehensive overview of research in health communication. Upon completing this course, students will have an understanding of health communication theories/models, the major areas of study in health communication, and will know how to read and critique empirical research articles. This course operates as a seminar. Students are expected to participate fully in class discussions on assigned readings.
POLICIES & PROCUDURES: (1) Reading & Participation All readings should be done prior to the assigned class session. I expect you to participate fully in class discussions. (2) Assignment Quality There are writing assignments in this course. They are designed to give you an opportunity to critically evaluate current research in health communication and to develop your thinking in terms of your own research ideas. I expect your written assignments to reflect considerable effort and to be polished. If, upon reading the first few paragraphs of a paper, I consider it to be substandard, I will return it to you ungraded and ask to meet with you to discuss the assignment. Under no circumstances will accept electronic submissions; you must turn in a hard copy of your assignments. (3) Missed or Late Assignments By definition, late assignments are below average. Missed or late assignments create major time and scheduling conflicts, and are unfair to those who are prepared. For these reasons, any late assignment will have 10 points deducted from the score as a penalty for each day it is late (including weekends). An assignment is considered late when it is submitted after the stated deadline, and deductions will be taken beginning with the missed deadline. The only exception to this policy is if the absence is officially excused based on the student rights and responsibility code. (4) Attendance Attendance is required in a graduate seminar that meets once a week. I will ask for official written documentation for absences. No excuses or documentation will be accepted more than two weeks after the absence. Each unexcused will reduce you final grade by 2%.
EVALUATION/COURSE GRADE: 1. Class participation 10% 2. Mid-term paper 45% 3. Final exam 45% TOTAL 100%
