The objectives of this course are to introduce you the concepts of what medical informatics means, implies, should be and could be, progress of the use of ICT technology in healthcare, service, research, delivery and management. We will use the book, Biomedical Informatics: Computer Applications in Healthcare and Biomedicine (4th ed.), edited by Drs Shortliffe and Cimino when they were both faculty in the University of Columbia, as “Reference” textbook. This means you could start from here but end up at the google references with more updated cases. 14 topics will be picked from that book and introduced at the class by faculty. The materials and contents delivered at each class will be determined by the faculty in charge. Your performance will be graded by your involvement during the classes and final term paper, which will be explained in detail in the class.

None. The is the entry course to assist you correctly understand the contents and issues of people- and societal-perspectives of health/medical informatics. This course does NOT cover the bio-components which relates to the cells and tissues.

Class Attendance and Participation: 30%; Personal Project: 70%
