As the rapid increase in aging and decline in fertility for the past decade in most countries, this demographic transition has significantly shaped certain family and social groups particularly vulnerable to their gender socialization. Gender equality is one of major sustainable development goals (SDGs) in United Nations, which is also underscored by WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health and links gender equality (SDG 5) and well-being (SDG 3) together. Built upon the United Nations’ Sustainable Goals framework, this course is designed to explore the multifaceted dimensions of gender equity and issues related to gender equity and examine the challenges and opportunities for promoting gender equality in various contexts and across Taiwan and other regions of the world. We will consider gender across the life course as well as its intersection with race, SES, sexuality, age, and ethnicity. We will draw on theory, research and literature from multi-disciplines. Organized around student-directed projects, this course facilitates students to explore how gender and gender equity are understood in daily life experiences and UN designated regions, such as Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, and Western Pacific. The course takes an in-depth discussion at ongoing challenges with a focus on promising policies or interventions to promote gender equity. Students will review academic scholarship and other sources of information, and be encouraged to critically discuss them in class. This course is designed for students who are fluent English speakers, and also welcomes students who are not yet fluent in English. Although the class is taught in English, there will be opportunities for students to work together in other shared languages. In addition, through an interdisciplinary approach, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry's perspectives toward sustainable gender equity, the role of policy and administration in promoting gender equity in Taiwan, and strategies for challenging workplace gender inequality through collective action. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to advocate for and contribute to sustainable gender equity in diverse settings. In specific, participant students are expected to: - Identify issues related to sustainable gender equity from various perspectives. - Describe how gender equity relates to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. - Explain gender equity and its role in healthy, sustainable societies. - Identify effective strategies to promote gender equity, and whether these may be adapted and applied to a specific setting. - Articulate their own informed perspective on gender equity, including its causes, consequences, and potential solutions to issues.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Class Participation: The participation of everyone is essential to achieve the learning goals of this course. In-class exercises will be conducted and used as an indicator of his or her understanding of the assigned text readings and lecture content. Class participation will also be assessed and strong and constructive involvement in the classroom process will have a positive impact on a student’s final course grade. Students are expected to complete these readings before the class meeting for which they are assigned. Student Presentation: Each student will be required to independently present a gender equity topic according to his/her own research interests. COURSE GRADING: Specific criteria for evaluation will be posted on e3 and discussed at the beginning of each semester. Final grades will be determined as follows: 40% Class participation 35% Student conference 25% Student presentation PPT
