In this course, the nature and purpose of health and nursing related theories are explored. Paradigmatic progress in health and nursing is also introduced. The methods of concept development are compared and contrasted. The components of theory and the process of theory development are discussed. Several schemes for evaluating theory are presented. The relationships among theory, practice and research are discussed. Students are encouraged to critique, evaluate and utilize appropriate theories within individual practice areas. Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Identify the components of a model or theory. 2. Ascertain the relationship between knowledge synthesis and concept development. 3. Critically review theories and conceptual models from health and nursing related areas and/or other disciplines for use in advanced practice. 4. Evaluate selected theories and conceptual frameworks using a variety of schemes. 5. Utilize critical thinking skills in the application of theories/conceptual frameworks/models in a variety of clinical environments. 6. Identify the implication of selected theories and conceptual frameworks for various health and nursing related practice or research areas.

1. Class participation (10%) 2. Presentation of classical nursing theories & models (20%) a. Overview of the conceptual model or theory b. Concepts and their relationships in the conceptual model or theory c. Evaluation of the conceptual model or theory d. Implication of the conceptual model or theory e. Organization, closely comply with time frame f. Audiovisual aids preparation 3. Prepared presentation in a selected conceptual model or theory (35%) Conduct discussion in the class by selecting a conceptual model or theory of interest. Discuss with instructors about the outlines of the presentation materials at least one month prior to the presentation. Emphases are on raising issues and generating critical discussions. a. Discussion outline with instructor b. Overview of the conceptual model or theory c. Concepts and their relationships in the conceptual model or theory d. Evaluation of the conceptual model or theory e. Implication of the conceptual model or theory f. Raise critical issues or questions for discussion g. Organization, closely comply with time frame h. Audiovisual aids preparation 4. Final written paper (35%) Select a conceptual model or theory you have presented and carefully discuss its application for health and advanced nursing related practice (15-20 pages) a. Overview of the conceptual model or theory b. Concepts and their relationships in the conceptual model or theory c. Evaluation of the conceptual model or theory d. Application of the conceptual model or theory in health and advanced nursing related practice (indicate how a conceptual model or theory guides health and nursing related interventions) e. Appropriate literature supports for the paper f. Content comprehension g. APA style
