概述

This course will explore two topics. We will examine whether a scientific inquiry is simply a matter of evidence and logic or rule-governed inference or requires a variety of value judgments. Second, we will discuss whether social (ethical, prudential, political, etc.) values play any role in scientific inquiry. If so, how best to characterize these roles? This course will start with an introductory book about values in science, then two Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entries on the social dimensions of scientific knowledge and feminist perspectives on science. These will prepare students with some background knowledge before diving into current debates among journal articles.
