Attention determines what is at the center—or, according to some philosophers and scientists of mind, what enters—our mental or conscious world. It is closely related to our perception, memory, imagination, and reasoning and is critical in our decision-making, action, and experiences. Attention, as a mental action, a target of manipulation, or even a commodifiable resource, is therefore a central topic in education, tech industry, economy, mental health, etc. This course aims to introduce you to the philosophical and ethical discussions concerning attention, including: ● What is attention? What are theories of attention? ● How is attention related to morality? Can attention be assessed normatively? ● What is the role of attention in epistemic injustice? ● What are the ethical concerns of attention-manipulating technologies? By examining the literature and arguments, students will familiarize themselves with these issues and develop the ability to analyze and be critical to philosophical arguments.
