The aim of this course is to introduce students to main issues of philosophy, and to cultivate critical thinking and philosophical ways of life. Human civilization consists of the development of a variety of disciplines ranging from religion, science, medicine, law, social and political systems, and the arts. Philosophy is a unique discipline to examine the basic principles and presuppositions of these heterogeneous disciplines with an aim to both advance them forward and to better improve human wellbeing. Topics to be discussed in this course include the nature of mind, self, consciousness, language, knowledge, science, morality, death, equality, justice, free will, and God. Through reading and critically discussing some important philosophical work which deals with these topics, students will not only get a more holistic understanding place in the world, but also to better appreciate the particular discipline such as medicine and biology, science and engineering, humanity and social sciences, business and finance, agriculture and ecology, etc. in which they pursue domain-specific knowledge.
