This course will cover the basics of public speech and also methods for academic conference presentations. Throughout the course and in the exam weeks there will be opportunities for students to practice speeches and presentations in front of the whole class. The instructor provides training in listening and speaking skills using a variety of topics that highlight different features of English. In addition, students will engage in frequent oral activities and assignments and give two major oral presentations. With sufficient oral practices, students will have chances to improve their oral presentation skills, develop their confidence to express themselves, and learn about public speaking analysis. (This course will be conducted in English).
This course aims to improve students’ speaking ability and build their confidence when speaking in public. Another goal of this course is to enhance students’ English proficiency and oral presentation skills.
Mid-term exam (3 minute oral English speech+ speech outline & analysis) 30% Final exam (Oral English presentation+ Q&A) 25% Attendance and participation 25% Assignments (In-class activities and in-class handouts) 20% * The grading of the speech will focus on these dimensions: content and structure organization, word usage and grammar, pronunciation, intonation, fluency, volume, body language, eye contact, and speech outline & analysis. * The grading of the presentation will focus on these dimensions: content and structure organization, word usage and grammar, pronunciation, intonation, fluency, volume, body language, eye contact, Q&A interaction, and visual aids. 1. * If you need to take leave of absence, please remember to follow the school procedure for taking leave of absence and make sure the form is approved. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. 3 points will be deducted each time for students who are late to class, leave early, or are absent without giving prior notice. 2. According to the Humanities and Social Science Education Center meeting on September 23, 2013: In order to improve the quality of teaching and the efficiency of students’ learning, students in the classrooms are not allowed to use 3C products for all courses offered by the center. (Special circumstances otherwise indicated.) 3. Doing activities unrelated to the course during class time will affect the participation grades. 4. Please write homework and exams yourself and do not cheat. Once found, the assignment will be graded as zero. 5. Please submit your homework on time. 5 points will be deducted for each day until the late assignment is turned in. 6. For students graduating this year, please note that you will need to take the full 18 weeks to receive final grades.
