This course explores the intersection of design, technology, and society through a speculative lens. It is designed for students who may not have a background in design. Through a lens from Human- Computer Interaction (HCI) , user experiencee and critical design, this course will combine hands-on projects, HCI readings and discussion for students to develop their ability to think critically about technology and its impact on society, and create speculative design videos, storyboards, and design fictions. The course will also cover research through design and provide insights and exercise from HCI perspective. Course Objectives: By the end of the course, students will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of speculative design and its relevance to technology and society. Analyze and critically evaluate the social and ethical implications of emerging technologies. Apply HCI methodologies to imagine and prototype speculative design concepts. Conduct research through design to explore speculative design ideas. Integrate human-computer interaction knowledge into speculative design projects. Create engaging and visually compelling speculative design videos, storyboards, or design fictions. Articulate and communicate their design concepts effectively, both orally and in written form. Collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams to develop speculative design projects. Reflect on the implications of speculative design and technology in relation to UX.
It may be helpful that you have taken courses such as User Experience Design/Research, Human Computer Interaction, Interaciton Design, Science and Technology classes or other design related courses. But you will enjoy this class no matter what! All disciplinaries are welcomed and encouraged!
