The emerging needs for discovering and developing successful treatments for cancer and degenerative disease, either inherited or spontaneously occurred, are devastating. These are currently unmet medical needs. Organoids are newly developed biomedical system of patient-in-a-test-tube which highly represents patients’ pathological signatures in multiple ways including genetic heterogeneities, cellular behavior, disease progressions, drug response, and organizations of a tissue in vivo. Organoids can be derived from biopsies of tumor patients directly or by a stepwise differentiation procedures for generating mini-tissues from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) of same patient. These advancing breakthroughs pave new ways in biomedical research. It becomes feasible of using in vitro or ex vivo system as a replacements of real human subjects and it accelerates biomedical discoveries with high accuracies in terms of translation medicine. In this course, we present an introduction of biomedical organoids in both cancer organoids and organoids derived from iPSCs as model system and bring the knowledges of biomedical organoids from established disease model system of the frontiers of challenging biomedical research including anti-tumor therapies and treatments for degenerative diseases for students. We present these from bedside-to-bench and bench-to-bedside discoveries of using biomedical organoids as model systems in a main theme of stating from basic science and to the potential biomedical applications. This course is a combination of the research coalition inputs from Bo-Ai campus and Yang-Ming campus of National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University. And we hope to inspire and ignite new comers who are brave enough aiming to find the answers for these currently unmet medical needs.
This course is a multidisciplinary course combing molecular biology, oncology, stem cell biology and gene therapies. Students who are interested in oncology and stem cell biology can join this course.
