概述

This course is designed for freshman students and serves as an introduction to the basics of college-level writing. Our primary focus will be on developing the skills necessary for generating original ideas and effectively engaging with the work produced by others. At the same time, we will explore essential writing components, including argumentation, logic, structure, word choice, and collocations. By actively participating in hands-on activities, students will establish a solid foundation in writing. These practical exercises will involve the analysis of various media, such as images, short video clips, poems (or song lyrics), and brief articles.

Course Policies Major Assignments and Revision Throughout the course, you will receive prompts for three major assignments, typically varying in length from 300 to 500 words each. Towards the end of the term, you will be expected to submit a revision of one major assignment. This revision will generally stem from either the assignment with the lowest score or one that holds the potential for significant transformation. It is imperative to understand that making minimal alterations, such as tweaking a few word choices, rectifying punctuation, or addressing grammatical mistakes, will result in a maximum score of 50 out of 100. Quizzes and Midterm Exam The questions presented in both quizzes and the midterm exam are sourced from the assigned readings and provided handouts. Late Work Late submissions will not be accepted, except under circumstances of illness or emergencies. In such cases, a two-day extension may be granted. It is crucial to be mindful of assignment deadlines and manage your time effectively. Final Scores Once the computation of your final grade is complete, you will be informed via a group email. You will then have a 24-hour window to contact me if you have any questions about your grades. Once this 24-hour period has passed, your final grade will be considered official. Paper Format Please make sure to adhere to the instructions outlined in your prompts for all major assignments and revisions. Deliberate noncompliance with these guidelines will lead to a deduction of 10–20 points from your assignment score. AI-Assisted Writing Feel free to use tools like ChatGPT to assist you in revising sentences and seeking feedback. However, please avoid using it to generate arguments on your behalf. It is also important to verify all information produced by AI writing tools. For more insights into the implications of AI-assisted writing, you can refer to resources like the "UCSB Writing Program AI Policy." Plagiarism Should you incorporate ideas from others, it is vital to attribute them properly in your writing. Maintaining academic integrity is of the utmost importance. Cases of plagiarism will lead to a score of 0 points for the specific assignment, and the infraction will be recorded. Email Etiquette Please call me Richard, Chung-Hao, or Prof. Ku in our email exchanges. Feel free to reach out if you need to report sick/personal leave, ask simple questions, or schedule an appointment. Kindly review our syllabus before sending your inquiries. Also, when crafting an email, you need to formulate an apt subject line (for example, "Writing Composition: Questions about Midterm Exam") and remember to identify yourself.
